From Grime to Shine: How Power Washing Transforms Your Deck

Is it safe to use a power washer on my deck?

Yes, it is safe to use a power washer on a deck for refinishing, but it must be done correctly to avoid damaging the wood. Here are some tips from Chuck Rader Master Painter and Remodeler to ensure your deck or patio looks great year round:

1. Use a power washer with a pressure range of 1500 to 2000 PSI. Higher pressure may damage the wood.

2. Use a wide fan tip to distribute the water pressure over a larger area.

3. Keep the nozzle moving to avoid gouging the wood.

4. Hold the nozzle about 12 inches away from the deck.

5. Power wash along the grain of the wood, not against it.

6. Use a deck cleaner in conjunction with the power washer for the best results.

Remember, power washing will only remove loose paint and dirt. It will not remove solidly-adhered old paint. For that, you will need to sand the deck after it has dried following the power washing.
